SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The American Foundation for Artificial Intelligence today announced Open Cloud, a public-interest initiative intended to broaden access to the infrastructure required for advanced AI research, education, and experimentation.
The program will bring together donated compute, cloud and model credits, research tools, institutional partnerships, and technical assistance for eligible projects that might otherwise lack access to modern AI infrastructure.
Resources for research and education
Depending on project needs and available contributions, Open Cloud may provide GPU capacity, storage, model access, research environments, and engineering support. Competitive Compute Grants will evaluate proposed projects for public benefit, technical need, feasibility, additionality, and responsible use.
Potential participants include university and nonprofit researchers, educators, students, public institutions, independent researchers, and teams building open or public-interest technology.
A distributed research network
AFAI's longer-term goal is a distributed network connecting university infrastructure, commercial cloud resources, model providers, and dedicated public-interest computing capacity.
Puerto Rico is envisioned as an important Caribbean node in that network, supporting regional researchers and deeper collaboration with institutions across the United States.
